Bill Kwok Tchui, a native of Vietnam, is a self-taught artist who, at the age of 10, began photographing under the guidance of his uncle. At age 15, he was working for his family's photo studio as a retoucher. After the Fall of Saigon, he escaped Vietnam in 1978, was one of the " boat people" as we call today. He spent 8 months in a refugee camp at Pulau Tengah, an island in Malaysia. In April 1979, he immigrated to the United States and settled down in San Francisco. He honed his artistic skill with the retouching work at a well respected studio in San Francisco, and developed his unique insight into the art of photography that enables him to produce the photographic artwork today. With the combination of his knowledge and the use of a variety of cameras including Hasselblads, Rolleiflex, Fuji Panoramic 6x17 and Leica, he captures the natural colors of scenery that highlight the exquisite beauty and tranquility of China. His work also showcases a little known side of Vietnam (Phan Thiet) by presenting the peaceful beauty of arid desert sand dunes. |
